An original example of one of the most copied posters in American history. It is an iconic image, capturing the insouciance and spirit of the early Twentieth Century. Christy gives a twist to the theme and slogan first used by the British artist Alfred Leete in his World War I recruiting poster showing the British General Lord Kitchener pointing his finger directly at the viewer and saying, “Your Country Needs YOU.” This widely imitated poster was first adapted in the United States by James Montgomery Flagg, who famously replaced Lord Kitchener with Uncle Sam and simplified the slogan to, “I WANT YOU”. Christy took it a step farther, not only replacing Uncle Sam with a pretty woman but giving a double meaning to the caption.
Printed by the Forbes Lithograph Manufacturing Company. Forbes was established in 1892 in Boston but at their height, they came to have offices in Boston, New York, Chicago, and London, with more than 600 designers, artists, engravers, lithographers, and other workers producing advertising items such as bullheads, trade cards, calendars, and lithographs. During the World Wars they supported the war effort by printing posters for the U.S. Government, such as this recruiting poster. Forbes closed in the 1950s.
Examples of this poster are held in major museums world-wide.
Professionally backed on linen and restored edge and corner wear, tears and creasing, and infill. Easily rates an A- condition rating. This poster presents very well and will be particularly nice when framed.
