Jules Georges Redon was a figural artist known for his humorous portrayals of children and animals. He also produced numerous posters, many of which remain treasured parts of French history. He did a great deal of work for the cabarets and restaurants in his Montmartre neighborhood, including humorous covers for menus.
This work likely was created to serve as a menu cover.
The text to the lower margin reads “la poule mange les escargots” [“The Hen Eats the Snails”].
This etching precedes the 1931 lithograph published by Lecaplain & Cie.
