About the work

With rich colors laid thick on the paper and deeply impressed with the intaglio press, this picture is powerful and mystical. Margot Lovejoy was devoted to social justice activism and feminism; themes echoed in this work with totemic feminine figures almost hidden in the patterns.

Lovejoy was a celebrated artist, exhibiting at the 2002 Whitney Biennial and MOMA; receiving a Guggenheim Fellowship in 1987; and creating a ground-breaking website which has been archived by the Walker Art Center. Lovejoy was a professor emerita at SUNY Purchase. Her work is held in the permanent collections of MOMA, the Getty, and the Neuberger Museum.
