John Formicola

John Formicola is a contemporary artist working in Philadelphia.  He earned a CFA from the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts and studied in Florence, Italy, for nine years; and traveled and studied art history in Spain, France, Belgium, England, Germany, and Austria.  He has taught design at Drexel University since 2001.

His work is in the collections of many fine museums, including the Philadelphia Museum of Art, the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts, La Salle University, the Carnegie Museum of Art, the Cleveland Museum of Art, the Lowe Art Museum in Miami, Villanova University.

Formicola’s work has been exhibited at major galleries in the U.S. and abroad, including Waterworks in New Hope, the Pennsylvania Academy of the Arts, the Frank Marino Gallery in New York City; and Galleria d’Arte Internazionale in Florence.

Formicola received the Brent Taylor Memorial Award at the 50th Painting Exhibition at the Cheltenham Center for the Arts, Pennsylvania; Mary Butler Memorial Award; J. Henry Scheidt Traveling Scholarship and a fellowship at the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts; First Julius Hallgarten Prize at the National Academy of Design, New York City; Harrison Memorial Prize; and the Ford Foundation Print Prize.
