Larry Zox was an important New York abstractionist painter and printmaker whose work cut across the realm of abstract expressionist, Color Field, and lyrical abstraction, though he usually referred to himself as a colorist.
Zox studied at the University of Oklahoma and Drake University and the Des Moines Art Center. He was awarded a Guggenheim Fellowship and received grants from the National Endowment for the Arts. He was Artist-in Residence at the University of North Carolina at Greensboro, Dartmouth College, and Yale University.
His work has been exhibited in many one-person and group shows, including the Whitney, MOMA, Albright-Knox in Buffalo, the Art Institute of Chicago, Boston’s Museum of Fine Arts, and the Guggenheim.
A blue-chip artist, Zox’s work is held by MOMA, the Whitney, the Metropolitan Museum, the Tate Modern, the Hirshhorn, the Museum of Fine Arts, Harvard University’s Fogg Art Museum, the Guggenheim, and countless others.
