About the work

Stephen Crane’s Maggie: A Girl of the Streets, written in 1893, is the story of a deeply impoverished Irish immigrant family, and Maggie’s efforts to escape the crushing poverty and related problems which impact every aspect of her life. After a failed romance, she finds herself without a home. As the novella reaches its end, a prostitute (presumably Maggie) is described wandering the streets. Magggie is a marvel of literature, exploring gender and class dynamics that smothered late 19th Century America, along with the naturalism that justified it. This etching, by the great social realist Sigmund Abeles, portrays Maggie. It is haunting and evocative but beautiful and compelling.
