About the work

Karel Appel, a Dutch artist, was a co-founder of a group of artists known as “CoBrA”.  (The name was derived from “Copenhagen”, “Brussels”, “Amsterdam”).  CoBrA artists agreed that their work would focus on spontaneity and experiment.  Because of that, they intentionally drew inspiration from children’s drawings.  Thus, the childish nature of Appel’s work is not happenstance; it was very intentional, both because of the influence of childish thought and to express the spontaneity and experimentation of children’s art.

Karel Appel’s Cats portfolio consists of 17 prints celebrating every type of cat, from the Devil Cat to the Pink Cat. This picture gives us Sunshine Cat in all his colorful glory. This work was published in an edition of 125 preceded by 65 proofs and 15 artist’s proofs. This impression was from the set of 15 copies printed hors commerce, meaning that they were given by the publisher to the artist; the artist usually gifts these copies to very close friends and family and the like; consequently, they come very rarely to market and their rarity and special provenance is reflected in an elevated price.
