Nineteenth Century artist Gustave Doré made a famous etching, “Noah Curses Canaan”, in 1865. As the Bible tells, after the Flood, Noah lacked the moral compass which had led God t0 select him to build the ark. One day his son, Ham, looked upon Noah undressed and drunk and told his brothers. Noah was infuriated by Ham’s conduct and cursed Ham and his descendants, who were settled in the land of Canaan.
This work, by Guillaume Azoulay, restates Gustave Doré’s famous work.
This is the sole print made from this etching; it was printed hors commerce (not for commerce). It is always surprising to see monoprints like this because it must require great self-discipline by the artist to avoid making additional impressions—particularly of a work this good.
