About the work

A rare pure abstraction by Max Papart, who is best known for his collages, cubist, and Dada-influenced figurative work. An intaglio print (apparently a carborundum engraving) in dazzling and deeply-textured blue.

Though much of Papart’s work is figural, he consistently worked in pure abstraction throughout his career. Notably, Papart’s catalogue raisonné by Roger Green includes a similar work entitled Bormes Rouge (Pl. 149). Too, this work bears a notable resemblance to Papart’s 1962 work in pen and Indian ink, “Bormes” (Pl. 29).

This is an artist’s proof which preceded the edition of 40. (There is also another 1968 print in blue and red of the same name but which differs from this one.)
