About the work

A fine example of Philip Evergood’s place as a social commentator.

As is frequently true with Evergood’s work, Evergood’s titling of this work was inconsistent. It has been seen titled “Joyous Song” (the title used by Lippard), “Joyful Song”, and “Banjo Player”.

The only known printing of this work was the edition of 100 produced for Evergood’s longtime gallery, Gallery 63.  This example is unnumbered.

Bearing the gallery sticker from Gallery 63 en verso, as originally framed.
