An image of five hooded women. Stark simplicity but capturing unhidden fear. It could almost be taken as a commentary on current American politics, had it not been made more than 65 years ago.
In fact, this rare early work by Van Vliet is most likely to be an illustration of women at the famous wedding at Cana at which Jesus was said to have performed his first miracle, that of turning water into wine after the wine provided by the groom ran out.
This work is beautifully presented in a solid Walnut frame with a mat hand-wrapped in silk behind 99% UV-blocking art glass, framed using strictly conservation-grade materials. Bearing the former frame label which includes Van Vliet’s Philadelphia address, where she lived while working as an apprentice at Pickering Press.
A beautiful example of the eloquence and power of Van Vliet’s burin.
