About the work
Clare Turlay Newberry wrote and illustrated seventeen children’s books—all but three of which were about cats, and nearly all taken from real life. Four of her books were honored with the Caldecott award. This print is a fine reproduction of Newberry’s watercolor painting with pen-and-ink of 1936, used to illustrate the end-papers of her , Caldecott-winning book, April’s Kittens, published in 1943 by Harper & Brothers. It is a formal portrait of a not-formal animal (or maybe a not-formal portrait of a formal animal?); it is adorable and beautifully executed at the same time.
