About the work

Published on May 1, 1814, this work is a satire on Naoleon’s exile to Elba.

Napoleon is portrayed not caricatured but sitting on a kicking mule, sits stationary under a gallows, unaware of the Devil, who stands behind hinm on the mule. Two smaller demons stand on the crossbar of the gallows displaying a placard: “Triumphal Arch of the Bona[p]arte Dynasty”. This caricature is chock-full of cultural references, from Joséphine throwing a chamberpot at Napoleon to three bearded Jews clamoring for payment.

This is a fascinating contemporaneous commentary on Napoleon’s defeat from the British perspective.

In the fourfront is a group of four Jews, peddlers and money lenders.

In fine condition belying its more than 200 years of age. Reframed in its c. 1890 wooden frame using new strictly conservation-grade materials.
