About the work

Clayton Pond is an extraordinary artist, whose rich imagination is surpassed only by the richness of the ink on his serigraphs. The inventor of an entirely new way of producing serigraphs (commonly referred to as “silkscreens”), he achieves an incomparable glossiness and luminosity.  This image was abstracted from the 1965 serigraph “Flower Shop”—a shop in a train station in Stockholm where the artist traveled during the summer of 1965. “Flower Shop” was the first print in which the artist originated his reductive method of stenciling, whereby he gradually reduced the openings in the same stencil for each subsequent color. Pond’s printing process gave his prints a tactile relief surface by printing each new color layered on top of the previous one.
