Craig Cahoon is an experimental painter whose work has always reflected an examination of the effect of light on texture and surface. His intellectual focus is on the universality and timelessness of humans’ search for meaning amid the uncertainty of constant change, so he aims to convey the tension of being in a liminal space–that edge between the known and unknown. This is clear in his works where you see a different set of colors and textures from one angle than you do from another (an effect he has amplified in his current work, in which he uses “interference paint,” consisting of paints that incorporate titanium-coated mica flakes). This work—like much of his body of work—has a clearly-perceptible three-dimensionality—which, unfortunately, just does not come clear in photographs. This work remains in its original frame.
