About the work

Jaime Romano is one of Puerto Rico’s most important artists.  His years in Washington DC—earning a Master’s degree in painting from American University and then spending more than ten years working—were among his most formative.
Since his first solo shows in the 1960s, Romano has spent decades exploring the interplay of colors, the interplay of shapes, and the interplay of colors and shapes together. Though he is widely considered to be part of the Puerto Rico 1960s abstractionists school, he might better be considered a colorist.
This work, completed in 1984, is an exemplar of Romano’s ability to create three-dimensionality in both shape and color. The magical luminosity of some of the colors in this work shows Romano at his best and most lyrical.

Romano in Washington

Romano is Puerto Rican through-and-through, but we can still claim him for D.C. because of his connections to the city.  Romano earned a degree in Business Administration from the University of Puerto Rico in Río Piedras and a second undergraduate degree in Humanities–Fine Arts.  He came to the District in 1966 and earned a Master of Arts in Painting from American University.  He split his time between New York City and Washington D.C. from 1975 to 1986.  He then returned to Puerto Rico and taught in the Department of Fine Arts at the University of Puerto Rico in Río Piedras.  Romano retired, as a tenured Full Professor, in 2008.

Exhibition History

Romano is widely acclaimed, with works found in important collections and museums, including the Library of Congress, the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Museo de Arte Moderno in Colombia, and the Museo de Arte Contemporáneo de Puerto Rico, among many others. Despite that, little of his work has yet emerged in the secondary market. This work is a rare find of one of his mid-career paintings, arguably among his most powerful.

Since 1964 Romano has presented more than 40 solo shows in Puerto Rico, New York, Washington, D.C. and Atlanta. He has also participated in numerous important group shows throughout the Caribbean, North and South America, and Europe. His works are found in significant public and private collections at national and international levels. In 1987, the Ponce Museum of Art and Chase Manhattan Bank showed a selection of his works created during his years of residence in the United States. His first solo show at the Museo de Arte Contemporáneo de Puerto Rico in 2002 consisted of works done during his year-long sabbatical from the University of Puerto Rico. The 2015 exhibition at the same venue in recognition of his 50-year of career was his most comprehensive, spanning the years 1967-2015.
