About the work

Jack Gerber, based outside of Philadelphia, celebrates The Trocadero Theatre in this painting. The Arch Street Opera House opened in 1870; it was renamed many times until become “Troc Theatre” in 1940 (though it apparently had other names later). It was a burlesque theater for most of its existent. By 1982 the Pennsylvania Opera Theater began mounting productions there–it is likely that it is POT productions that Garber was celebrating in this work. Sadly, the Troc closed in 2019.
