This abstracted cityscape is among Sockwell’s earliest uses of abstraction. It marks a rare view into the early use of the imagery and expression which would appear in Sockwell’s work throughout his career. In remarkably good condition for a work by Sockwell (other than those sold when first exhibited) because Sockwell’s peripatetic life was not always easy on the artwork.
Carroll Sockwell’s artistic talent was discovered by Elinor Ulman when Sockwell was an adolescent being treated at Saint Elizabeth’s hospital. Ulman, one of the seminal art therapists, anonymized Sockwell’s work by referring to him as “Paul” and marking the letter “P” on his works. This work is so designated en recto lower right.
This work has been indexed as Number 01043 in the Sockwell Catalogue Raisonné (forthcoming).
