A bold and expressive work of black India ink splashed on a pure white board, this work marries together some of Franz Kline’s mid-20th century action paintings with Sesshū Tōyō’s mid-15th century splashed ink landscapes. But this is not derivative in any sense; it plainly demonstrates Carroll Sockwell’s personality and perspective and the exploration of space and shape found in his later works.
