Carroll Sockwell, a Washington native, lived his entire life in Washington except for 1959, which he spent in New York City. This work, then, is one of few works extant from Sockwell’s New York sojourn. This work speaks to the iconographic works of Franz Kline but reflecting Sockwell’s facility with oil pastel, texture, and color.
The sheet, 18 in. x 24 in., float-framed in a welded aluminum frame (of the type invented by Robert Kulicke) behind True Vue-brand 99% UV-filtering Museum Glass. Mounted on buffered matboard to ameliorate further damage by acidity in the paper.
