About the work

The Creator by Albert-Edgar Yersin was part of a 1949 portfolio produced by an artist’s group in Paris called “Graphies”, formed in 1948 by Henri Goetz, Christine Boumeester, Andre Flocon, and Raoul Ubac. They decided that for their first collective album no subject could be more suitable for engravers united in their love for the work—and who believe that the struggle with the work is the raison d’être of their art—than the human hand. The resultant portfolio, “For the Glory of the Hand” [La Gloire de la Main], was completed on Wednesday, June 15, 1949.

Albert-Edgar Yersin, a member of Graphies, was an artist and illustrator whose distinct style pulled together Surrealism, abstraction, and figurative art. He influenced a generation of artists and sparking a new wave of interest in etching and artists’ books.
