About the work

This work is probably Luis Arenal’s most iconic image. It has been identified as “Woman of Taxco” [Mujer de Taxco] and Head of an Indian Woman [Cabeza de Indigena], but it is most often referred to as “Head of a Woman” [Cabeza de Mujer].

Impressions of this work are held in the collections of Mexico City’s Museo Nactional de Arte and, in the United States, MOMA (MoMa Ref. No. 38.1954), the Los Angeles County Museum of Art (Ref. No. M.2001.111.2), the San Diego Museum of Art (Acc. No. 2008.4), the Portland Art Museum, and the Ackland Art Museum in Chapel Hill (Ref. No. 58.2.97).

The edition size is unknown. LACMA states that they hold impression 8 of 25 but the edition size appears to be unknown. This work was also printed by Associated American Artists in an edition of 250.

Condition:

Good condition. Age toning and visible foxing; some brittleness; glue stains from prior framing along margins.
