Nat Lowell

American, born Latvia

1880 – 1956

Nat Lowell, born in Latvia, emigrated to New York City, where he worked and which he celebrated for his entire career.  He is one of the great chroniclers of New York City.

Like many of the greatest artists, Lowell was also a teacher.  He taught at Hunter College and at the New School in New York.  (Take a look at this work, which Jack Youngerman was commissioned to create to mark the fiftieth anniversary of the founding of the New School.)

Lowell studied at the Art Students League.  Lowell’s works are found at the National Gallery of Art, the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Newark Museum, the New York Public Library, the New York Historical Society, the Albright-Knox Art Gallery, the Library of Congress, and a great many others.
