Max Papart

French

1911 – 1994

Max Papart is one of France’s most important Twentieth Century artists.

He was famous for cubist depiction of fun and happy subjects, like circuses, birds, ballet, people. But his images are far more than meets the eye at first glance. They captivate and demand examination–particularly his emphatically cubist works filled with high contrast and textured surfaces that are often paired with strong composition and color.

Papart has been the subject of half a dozen or more books; his works are held by major museums across the globe, from the Musée d’Art Moderne de la Ville de Paris to the Israel Museum in Jerusalem, from the Museum of New Mexico to the Bibliotheque Nationale, from the Indianapolis Museum of Art to London’s National Gallery.
