Irving Amen made several works on the theme of chess, including this etching printed in 1962. Depicted are elaborate, whimsical pieces on a chess board. The king appears quizzical and sports a curled moustache and pointed beard; the buxom queen is featured in profile; the pawn has a nervous look; a proud steed represents the knight; and a castle tower with a pennant blowing in the wind represents the rook. This print enjoys a beautiful example of Amen’s signature. Please note that this print is from the first printing in an edition of 60, apparently hand-colored, and not the more commonplace black and white etchings printed in 1966 in an edition of 90.
