This example of the picture is one of only two presentation proofs created. It was previously part of the art collection of a large Minnesota corporation, presumably created for and presented to the company, which was a patron of Cumming’s.
This picture portraying a somewhat-abstracted lightbulb, drawing together–as does most of Cumming’s works–references to science and art history. It was always Cummings’ intent to create interesting and engaging works which layer meanings within meanings within meanings. Cumming’s 1985 unique work of the same name executed in graphite, ballpoint, and grease residue (spatter pattern) on tracing vellum is held by the Minnesota Institute of Art.
This work was printed by Philip Barber and Michael Herstand under the supervision of the great master printer Steven Andersen at Vermillion Editions Limited in Minnesota. It is framed in a solid Maple frame, with a strainer for long-term structural stability, behind Plexiglas. The frame is 44.5 in. (h) x 34.25 in. (w).
