After finishing his 13-image series “La Saison des Amours” in 1949, Johnny Friedlaender created a series of semi-erotic etchings in 1949 and 1950 entitled “Couples.” “Couple I” and “Couple II” were never editioned and the plates were destroyed. “Le Couple” was printed in an edition of 10 and the plate was destroyed. “Couple III” was also never editioned but some number of artist’s proofs were printed (presumably 5, as an extant image shows, but there is no definitive number). The plate was destroyed.
“Couple IV”, “Couple V”, and “Couple VI” were not editioned when the plates were made in 1949/50 but Editeur Touchstone published them in a portfolio entitled “Trois Couples” in an edition of 100 of each in 1967 (with another ten printed with plate tone on Auvergne paper). Also in 1967, Manus Presse published “Couple IX”, an etching in two colors, in an edition of 80.
There appears to be an anomaly, though. When Touchstone published Trois Couples Manus Presse in Germany published Couple IX. This print, Couple IV, was presumably published by Touchstone but it bears the Manus Press blindstamp.
