About the work

George Redon was a figural artist known for his humorous portrayals of children and animals. He also did a great deal of poster work, many of which remain treasured parts of French history. He did much work for the cabarets and restaurants in his Montmartre neighborhood, including humorous covers for menus.

The text to the lower margin reads “Ne buvez jamais d’eau.” This phrase translates to “Never drink the water.”

This work likely was created to serve as a menu cover–desirable for the restaurant owner who wanted to increase wine sales.

Impressions of Redon’s work were limited but not numbered and the size of the edition is unknown.
